Leak Repairs

Fixing the Leaks You Can See

A visible leak is easier to find than a hidden one, but it still needs dealing with before it rots a floor, stains a ceiling or adds to your water bill. Typical jobs include a tap dripping from the spout or handle, a compression joint weeping under a sink, a radiator valve leaking at the spindle, a toilet seeping at the pan connector and an overflow pipe running outside.

Emergency Local Plumbers finds what has failed, whether a washer, cartridge, olive, seal or the fitting itself, and repairs or replaces it. Where a part is worn out, we explain whether a repair will hold or a new fitting is the better option, and you agree the price before we begin. If the leak is getting worse or you cannot shut it off, we take call-outs 24/7, every day of the year.

What Affects the Cost of a Leak Repair

Most visible leaks are straightforward to fix, and the cost depends on:

  • The fitting that is leaking and whether a part or the whole fitting needs replacing.
  • The make and age of the tap, valve or cistern, which affects whether parts are available.
  • Whether the heating system needs draining down to repair a radiator or valve.
  • How accessible the leak is, for example behind a bath panel or under a fitted unit.
  • When the call-out is, as nights and weekends are covered.

The work

How a Leak Repair Is Carried Out

The main stages of the job, from finding the fault to the final check.

  1. Identifying the Failed Part

We find exactly where the water is escaping and which washer, seal, joint or valve has failed.

  2. Confirming the Cost

We explain the repair or replacement and give you a price to approve first.

  3. Isolating and Fixing

We isolate the supply or drain down the heating where needed, then fit the new part or fitting.

  4. Testing and Reviewing

We restore the water and check the joint stays dry, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Leak Repair Questions

Is a dripping tap worth fixing?

Yes. A constant drip wastes water, can stain basins and baths, and usually means a washer or cartridge is worn. Replacing that part is often enough, and we tell you if the tap itself needs replacing.

What can I do about a leak until you arrive?

Turn off the isolation valve on the pipe feeding the fitting, or the stopcock if there is none, and put a container or towels under the leak. For a leaking radiator, close both radiator valves.

Why is my overflow pipe dripping outside?

Usually a fill valve or float valve in a toilet cistern or loft tank is not shutting off, so water keeps rising until it reaches the overflow. Replacing or adjusting the valve normally stops it.

Can you fix a leaking radiator?

Yes. Leaks at the valve, the tail or the bleed valve are usually repairable. If the radiator itself has corroded through, we quote to replace it.

What if the leak turns out to be hidden?

If the water is coming from somewhere out of sight, such as under a floor or inside a wall, we trace it through our leak detection and repair service before fixing it.
