Stopping the Water and Repairing Burst Pipework

A burst pipe can release a large volume of water very quickly, soaking ceilings, floors and electrics. The first thing to do is shut off your stopcock and, if water is near light fittings or sockets, turn off the electricity at the consumer unit. Then call Emergency Local Plumbers. We take burst pipe call-outs every day of the year, day and night, and give a fast local response across Cambridgeshire, Essex and Suffolk.

Once on site we isolate the affected section, drain down if needed and cut out the damaged length, replacing it with new pipe and fittings. Frozen pipes are a common cause in cold spells, as ice expands inside the pipe and splits it, often at a joint or bend. We thaw and check the surrounding run as well as the obvious break, so a second weak point is found before it fails.

What Affects the Cost of a Burst Pipe Repair

Every burst is different, and the cost of putting it right depends on:

  • Where the pipe has burst and how much flooring, boxing or ceiling has to be opened to reach it.
  • The length of pipe and number of fittings that need replacing.
  • Whether the pipe is copper, plastic or an older material.
  • Whether the pipework has frozen and needs thawing before it can be repaired.
  • The time of the call-out, including nights, weekends and bank holidays.

How We Deal with a Burst Pipe

The main stages of the job, from finding the fault to the final check.

  1. Making Safe

We isolate the water, check whether electrics have been affected and stop any further leaking.

  2. Exposing the Damage

We open up only what is needed to reach the burst, inspect the pipework either side of it and give you a price for the repair.

  3. Replacing the Pipe

Once you approve the price, we cut out the damaged section, fit new pipe and fittings and pressure test the run.

  4. Checking the Repair with You

We restore the supply and check for leaks, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Your Burst Pipe Questions Answered

What should I do first if a pipe bursts?

Turn off the stopcock to cut the mains supply, then open your cold taps to drain the pipes. If water is near electrics, switch off the power at the consumer unit and do not touch wet fittings. Then call us.

Where is my stopcock?

In most homes it is under the kitchen sink, but it can also be in a utility room, a downstairs cloakroom, a cupboard under the stairs or where the supply pipe comes up through the floor. It is worth finding it before you need it.

Why do pipes burst in cold weather?

Water expands as it freezes, and the pressure splits the pipe or forces a joint apart. The leak often only appears once the ice thaws, so pipes in lofts, garages and on outside walls are most at risk.

Can you repair a burst pipe at night?

Yes. We take burst pipe call-outs 24/7, including weekends and bank holidays.

Will my insurance cover burst pipe damage?

That depends on your home or business insurance policy, so check with your insurer. Photos of the damage and a record of the repair can help with any claim.
