Leak Detection & Repair

Finding Hidden Leaks Before They Cause More Damage

Not every leak shows itself as a drip. Water escaping under a floor, inside a stud wall or from a heating pipe beneath the screed can go unnoticed for weeks. The signs are usually indirect: a water bill that has climbed for no reason, a boiler that keeps losing pressure, a damp patch that spreads, a musty smell or a water meter that keeps turning when every tap is off.

Emergency Local Plumbers traces the source methodically, isolating sections of the system, pressure testing pipework and checking each run until the leak is pinned down. That way we open up only the part of the floor or wall where the fault is, rather than guessing. Once found, we repair or replace the failed pipe or joint and retest the system. The repair is quoted before it starts, and the work is guaranteed.

What Affects the Cost of Leak Detection and Repair

Tracing and fixing a hidden leak is priced on the work involved, which depends on:

  • How many sections of pipework need isolating and testing before the leak is located.
  • Whether the leak is in the water supply or the heating system.
  • What has to be lifted or opened to reach it, such as floorboards, boxing or a wall.
  • The repair needed once the fault is found, from a single joint to a length of pipe.
  • Whether the system needs draining down and refilling afterwards.

The work

How We Trace and Repair a Hidden Leak

The main stages of the job, from finding the fault to the final check.

  1. Confirming the Leak

We check the meter, the pressure and any visible signs to confirm water is being lost and from which system.

  2. Narrowing It Down

We isolate and pressure test sections of pipework until the leak is located, then quote for the repair.

  3. Opening Up and Repairing

With the price approved, we open up only where needed and repair or replace the failed pipe or fitting.

  4. Retesting and Review

We retest the system, then review the completed work with you and confirm everything has been done as agreed.

FAQs

Questions About Hidden Leaks

How can I tell if I have a hidden leak?

Look for a rise in your water bill with no change in use, a heating system that needs regular topping up, staining on ceilings or walls, warm patches on a floor or a persistent damp smell in one room.

How do I check my water meter for a leak?

Turn off every tap and appliance that uses water, note the meter reading, then wait an hour without using any water. If the reading has changed, water is escaping somewhere between the meter and your taps.

Why does my boiler keep losing pressure?

A sealed heating system that needs repressurising often has a leak somewhere, possibly from a pipe under the floor or a radiator valve. A fault inside the boiler, such as the pressure relief valve, can also cause it, and we check both.

Will you need to take up my floor?

Only where the leak is. We narrow it down by isolating and testing sections of pipework first, so any floor or wall that needs opening is limited to the area around the fault.

Do you repair the leak once it is found?

Yes. Once the leak is located we give you a price for the repair, and after you approve it we fix or replace the failed pipe or joint and retest the system.
